Unwanted Hair Removal

Removing unwanted hair can be a nuisance; shaving causes nicks and bumps, waxing every few weeks is painful, and tweezing is time-consuming as well as painful. Laser hair removal is a longer-lasting solution that is safe, effective, and relatively painless. Laser hair removal also leaves skin smoother than shaving alone can produce.

Hair can occur all over the body, but the most common areas that people want it removed from are the armpits, legs, arms, face, stomach, back, and bikini area. Smooth, hairless skin can be achieved almost anywhere you want with a laser hair removal!

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

At MI Skin Dermatology Center in Washington, DC, we use the Gentle Lase and Gentle Yag Laser Systems. These are long-pulsed Alexandrite and neodynium YAG lasers respectively. These lasers emit gentle beams of light that sagely targets follicles and destroys them, leaving the surrounding skin untouched. By destroying the cells in follicle responsible for new hair growth, this procedure can provide much longer-lasting results in ALL skin types than other methods.

The laser seeks out melanin in the follicles, so treatment works better on people who have darker hair. Light blonde or white, grey, and red hair are unfortunately more difficult to treat due to lack of melanin and similarity to skin color. What Is Treatment Like?

Hair removal treatment at the MI Skin Dermatology Center in Washington DC is a relatively quick and painless procedure. Depending on how large of an area is being treated, it can take anywhere from fifteen minutes to over an hour. Most patients describe the sensation of the laser removal as like snapping rubber bands; slightly painful but not anywhere near unbearably so.

Hair grows in different stages, so approximately five treatments are recommended for the best results. These sessions are spaced four to six weeks apart in order to be sure to get the follicle during the right stage of growth. An experienced dermatologist such as Dr. Isaac or Dr. Yanes in Washington DC will be able to accurately determine how far apart your treatments should be.

Are There Side Effects?

Some people think that having this laser removal procedure done will cause the hair to grow back thicker and darker, but this is just a myth. If anything, laser hair removal causes it to grow back more slowly and thinner. You don’t have to worry about thick dark hair regrowth while having treatments.

The most common side effects for laser removal are swelling around the affected follicles, redness, and inflammation which generally clear up within 24 to 48 hours. Temporary lightening or darkening of the skin may occur, but it is extremely rare that this is permanent.
