What Is the Difference Between Microneedling and RF Microneedling?

Microneedling and RF microneedling are related but not interchangeable treatments: While both use fine needles to stimulate collagen production, RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy for deeper, more noticeable skin tightening. Here’s how each treatment works and how to know which one best fits your needs.

What Is Microneedling?

Traditional microneedling creates tiny, controlled injuries in the skin using a device tipped with fine needles, such as the MicroPen or Collagen PIN. These micro-injuries prompt your body to produce new collagen and elastin, which smooths skin texture, softens fine lines, and evens out skin tone. Downtime is minimal, usually just a day or two of redness.

Microneedling and RF microneedling also provide an opportunity for deeper penetration of topical growth factors, skin brightening agents, and anti-aging serums to enhance treatment results.

How Does RF Microneedling Work?

RF microneedling takes that same needling concept of percutaneous collagen stimulation and pairs it with radiofrequency (RF) energy. At my practice, I use the Genius RF system, which delivers the RF energy through gold-tipped, insulated needles to safely heat the deeper layers of the skin to tighten the skin and improve scarring and other textural concerns.

RF microneedling tends to deliver more dramatic results in fewer sessions compared to regular microneedling, as I can adjust the depth and intensity of the treatment to match your goals.

Does Microneedling Tighten Skin?

Standard microneedling can only improve mild skin laxity, but its main strength is restoring brightness and tone, refining texture, and minimizing the appearance of pores. Enhanced results are seen when carefully selected topical serums are applied immediately after the microneedling channels are made, leading to brighter, more hydrated, and smoother skin.

For patients whose primary concern is loose or sagging skin, I usually recommend pairing it with, or upgrading to, RF microneedling.

Does RF Microneedling Tighten Skin?

Yes, and this is where RF microneedling sets itself apart. Because radiofrequency energy heats tissue beneath the surface, it stimulates greater collagen remodeling than needling alone, resulting in firmer, tighter-feeling skin, especially in areas like the arms, abdomen, and jawline. As with regular microneedling, topical serum boosters can be added to RF microneedling for optimal results.

Does RF Microneedling Cause Fat Loss?

No. RF microneedling remodels collagen to tighten the skin; it doesn’t target or destroy fat cells the way that dedicated fat-reduction treatments do. While RF microneedling can change how your skin looks and feels, it does not affect the amount of fat beneath it.

Is RF Microneedling Better Than Microneedling?

It depends on what you’re treating. If your main goals are smoother texture, brighter skin tone, softer fine lines, or an improvement in mild acne scars, standard microneedling is often enough. If skin laxity or deeper scarring are your primary concerns, RF microneedling will produce a more desirable result. Each treatment can be customized and paired with other procedures as part of your personalized plan.
