Everything You Need to Know Before Your First BOTOX® Treatment

If you are considering a BOTOX treatment with a board-certified dermatologist here in D.C., you likely have some questions about what you should expect during your first appointment. It’s normal to have uncertainty about what the experience will feel like, what you’ll look like after the treatment, and how long the results will last. Knowing what awaits you is a great way to feel empowered and prepared as you head into your appointment.

In this blog post, I’ll provide an overview of what you can expect before, during, and after a first-time BOTOX treatment.

What Happens During a BOTOX Consultation?

At the beginning of your appointment, you’ll discuss your goals and concerns with your dermatologist to make sure BOTOX is the best approach. You may also explore the benefits of other neuromodulators, such as Dysport® and XEOMIN®, or wrinkle-filling injectables such as JUVÉDERM®.

At my practice, I make sure my patients are good candidates from a medical perspective (no serious illnesses or infections near the injection sites, not pregnant or breastfeeding, etc.). I also take the time to ease any worries or concerns by answering questions and explaining what to expect for the treatment.

What Do BOTOX Injections Feel Like?

BOTOX injections are typically very comfortable. Some patients say they feel like small pinches or bug bites. Most people easily tolerate the injections, but I am happy to provide a topical numbing cream for my patients who are worried about discomfort.

How Long Do BOTOX Treatments Take?

BOTOX appointments are very quick, typically only taking 15 to 30 minutes. All it takes after the consultation is a brief but precise series of injections using a very thin needle.

Will I Be Able to Go Right Back to Work After BOTOX?

Most people are able to get right back into their daily routines, including work or school, immediately after their BOTOX treatment. The main change to your routine will be avoiding exercise for 24 hours to prevent “thinning out” the product and minimizing its effects.

You may have some redness or bruising around your injection sites, but this should resolve within a couple of days.

How Long Will My BOTOX Results Last?

Your results will start to take shape in about a week. BOTOX results typically last between 3 and 4 months. I recommend coming in for a touch up just before the results wear off, which usually means about 4 months. XEOMIN may take 10 to 14 days to take effect and should last 3 to 4 months, and Dysport starts to take effect in 2 to 3 days and lasts about 4 months.
